Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always had stronger and more intense emotions than my peers. In childhood, I spent hours poring over medical textbooks to try to figure out exactly what was wrong with me. At 28, after years of navigating the mental health industry, I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Now, as a writer, my lived experience informs my passion to educate others about the disorder and show the world that people who live with BPD aren’t all bad—in fact, there are many unique gifts people with the disorder possess. What is my book about?

My book is a harrowing but ultimately uplifting memoir about living with borderline personality disorder—the most stigmatized diagnosis in mental health. It was years before I found a diagnosis that explained the complicated way I moved through the world. I would have to advocate for myself in the mental health system while dealing with abuse, being unhoused, survival sex, suicide attempts, and hospitalizations.

Through it all, I found strength in my diagnosis. My recollections are visceral and confessional but also self-aware, irreverent, and funny. I bolster my personal recollections with deeply researched observations on Canada’s mental healthcare system and the history of diagnostics and disorders, using research supported by my work at Yale University.
